Day 7 - 660 kms to Canarvon Gorge

A full day travel in the car between Lightening Ridge and Canarvon Gorge

Key stats:

  1. Fuel consumption 22.9 litres per 100 kms
  2. Stops for fuel = 4
  3. Stops to stretch = 5
  4. Books read = 3
  5. "When are we gonna get there" comments = 14, 325

As Em and I shared the driving we passed through some vastly changing country side. So much road kill and just as many feasting wedge tail eagles. Its was heart breaking seeing some very gaunt looking kangaroos and cattle on the trail just north of lightening ridge and some towns names I cant remember (or want to). I'd never seen dry desolation like this - the environment was almost intimidating in its hostility. Our car struggled on through 41 degree heat, hence the terrible fuel economy. There were some quietly nervous periods when the oil temp on the car rose above average and the phone reception disappeared - we really should consider a sat phone.

The scrubby dry regions finally gave way to colour and shear rock faces.

Then to sights of horse back drovers moving cattle along the roads (where there is feed). A relief to finally see some happier looking animals (dont worry, this one was not a victim!).

We finally made our way into Takarakka Caravan park within Canarvon Gorge. After checking in and performing the obligatory caravan maneuvers with onlookers, we were greeted by a friendly next door camper who quickly whipped up some much needed enthusiasm after a long, long day on the road. She described some of the walking trails on offer, the only catch was the heat - we really needed to be on the track at first light - that's a story for my next post.
