Day 11 - 482 kms Charters Towers to Cairns

Not an activity rich day, the morning began with some fun in the holiday park pool before we hit the road, bound for Cairns.

By the way, thanks to all who have messaged and commented on the blogs - its great to know people are enjoying the blog as I'm enjoying posting. The "comments" restrictions have been lifted (sorry bout that!).

After another day in the car we've finally made it to the coast which was a sight for sore eyes after soooo much inland driving. The roads we've come from have been coarse and very lumpy making it impossible to maintain speeds around 100km/h. I'm loving the "normal" highways closer to the coast and fuel economy returns from being just absurd to acceptable. It has become pretty normal for us to spend 5+ hours in the car lately, but finally we'll be staying in this region for a couple of weeks before heading south to spend some time with an old mate (Jaime) on Magnetic Island.

During the car trip on Day 11 the kids reflected on what they'd seen. The many drovers mustering cows along the way seems to have inspired Josh. The boys spent an hour in the car planning Josh's future horse farm and Tom's cat rescue cafe, including staffing and franchising.

During this trip animals seem to be popping up everywhere we turn. Em commented how impressed she has been with the way the boys keep finding and connecting with animals - it has been non stop kangaroos, emus, eagles, wallabies, cows, horses, some turtles, echidna, gecko, skinks, then Crackers the talking cockatoo or feet eating fish at the Cairns night market... huh? check out the video below - its Tom and Josh's reaction as tiny fish nibble  away dead skin of their feet - not only did they volunteer, but we paid for it... nasty and disgusting!

If your wondering why we cant see them doing it, I'm told by the shady looking operators that the fish only feed in the dark... I reckon its more simple... do people really want to see see fish actually feeding on people...??

Tomorrow will be a rest day in Cairns. I'm really looking forward to getting onto the Bloomfield 4wd track. This is a rugged and scenic 30km dirt road connecting Cape Tribulation to Cooktown. We'll also be looking for the right weather for a beginners reef snorkeling tour.
